Who Can Develop Anorexia?
Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder and mental health condition characterized by severe restriction of food intake, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. It is not a choice or a lack of willpower. Early recognition and treatment can save lives.

People of any body size, race, ethnicity, or background
Individuals with perfectionistic traits, anxiety, OCD, or a family history may be at increased risk
Common Signs & Symptoms
Severely restricting food or calories
Intense fear of gaining weight
Distorted body image
Rapid or significant weight loss
Excessive exercise
Skipping meals or making excuses not to eat
Feeling cold frequently
Fatigue, dizziness, or fainting
Loss of menstrual periods or hormonal changes
Withdrawing from meals or social situations involving food
Possible Health Risks
Malnutrition and dehydration
Electrolyte imbalances
Slow heart rate and low blood pressure
Bone loss (osteoporosis)
Heart rhythm abnormalities
Kidney problems
Depression, anxiety, and increased suicide risk
How Is Anorexia Treated?
Medical evaluation and ongoing monitoring
Nutrition counseling with gradual nutritional rehabilitation
Individual and family therapy
Treatment for co-occurring anxiety, depression, or OCD
Medication when appropriate for associated mental health conditions
Hospitalization may be necessary when medical complications become severe
When to Seek Help Immediately
Rapid weight loss or inability to maintain nutrition
Fainting, chest pain, severe weakness, or dehydration
Thoughts of self-harm or suicide—call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department
